What does this mean for prevention?

For professionals, it means unconditional support, finding a practical way through a crisis.

For creditors, courts, tabloids (& twitter/X): back off, recognise the risk, find a little humanity.

But not as a replacement for professional help

Men and boys have a vital role to play, with women and girls and others, in ending menā€™s violence against women. To shift the patriarchal masculine norms and cultures that are at the root of domestic and sexual violence.

Academia is not about publishing papers.

Itā€™s about creating knowledge and teaching it to the world. Itā€™s about asking big bold questions and mentioning the next generation of intellectual leaders.

The difference makes a huge difference.

Unresolved trauma often gravitates toward 'in-groups'. These are fabricated & illusory 'safe-spaces' where all hate/rage is expelled onto 'out-groups', which become containers of what's been disowned & projected. As the battle is externalised, nothing internal can be resolved.

We should measure the impact of every health intervention we use. There is no point preventing some harms if we cause others. We can turn our nurses into bureaucrats, but what a waste of their skills & talents. Healthcare needs kindness. We know it works. Don't displace it.

Quality control has side effects, if we become bureaucrats who are deeply risk averse. We displace something important. Kindness. Compassion. Listening. Care. Tick boxes have side effects, and empathy training with another tickbox won't fix it. We need time to care. It matters.

Humiliation, feeling trapped or unjustly treated - common elements in suicidal crisis. Even if circumstances are individual.

Seen in professionals facing investigation but also people in debt, losing benefits or relationship or charged with an offence.

Vital to prevention.

On the subject of the $33 mill investment in Innowell. Innowell's budget would have funded me for 210 YEARS to see 40 pts a week. This is what the govt spends MH money on btw. GPs see 2.3 mill MH patients a year for 8% of the MH budget. That's most of them theguardian.com/australia-newsā€¦

If we want more GPs like me, with my expertise in MH, you need to pay me enough to keep me afloat financially. Because otherwise, I'll continue to have a 2nd job to subsidise my clinical work & have less hrs to see patients. While you invest $33 mill in an app that doesn't work.

Moments of policy stupidin GP (1)
If you see your GP for an hour for physical health, you get $113 back from Medicare, if its mental health its $76. And there is no MyMedicare for YOU. MH is excluded from the incentive rise.
