Grace is God’s free and unmerited favor shown to guilty sinners who deserve only judgment.  It is the love of God shown to the unlovely.  It is God reaching downward to people who are in rebellion against Him.

Legalism does indulge the sinful nature because it fosters self-righteousness and religious pride. It also diverts us from the real issues of the Christian life by focusing on external and sometimes trivial rules.

Jerry Bridges The flesh wars against Christ. It wants to sin, stay in sin and make us look to the sin, all the while it wants to keep us away from Christ, it wants to keep us from looking to Him as our complete and perfect Saviour.
