The books I’m spending my time with this week. Fitzcarraldo Editions Charco Press NYRB Classics #NYRBWomen2024 BRIAN has been a cinephilic delight thus far. Loving the tone of TIDAL WATERS.

The Substance review – Demi Moore is game for a laugh in grisly body horror caper theguardian.com/film/article/2… MUBI picked up North American distribution rights for this film, so we will get to see it at some point. Generally enthusiastic reviews out of Cannes.

Finished ALL FOURS, and a re-read of MAN and some of her short stories. She is a master of what happens when expectations are misplaced, the comedy and profundity which results. Another thing she is master of is tone which carries through all her work. Absolutely love her.

Book haul for the day. The Mallo was a surprise find, wasn’t expecting to come across that today. I’ve been meaning to read THE PIANO TEACHER for years, still haven’t read Jelinek. This copy of PRAISEWORTHY is for our friend Kim McNeill •📚🌿☕️ because she is the best!!

‘Limonov: The Ballad’: Cannes Review screendaily.com/reviews/limono… A premier in competition from the director of PETROV’S FLU. This piece by Jonathan Romney emphasizes Wishaw’s performance, as many others are. This critic is a guest on Film Comment Magazine Cannes #2 podcast!!

'Caught by the Tides' Review: Jia Puts Old Footage to Poetic New Use variety.com/2024/film/revi… This is getting rather good reviews after premiering today. Hearing how this film was put together is fascinating!!

'Emilia Pérez' Review: Leading Lady Karla Sofía Gascón Electrifies variety.com/2024/film/revi… A new Audiard is always an event, and I imagine this will get North American distribution given its stars. I like his films, but don’t like musicals, so….Seems well received by critics.

'Oh, Canada' Review: A Prismatic Portrait of a Dying Filmmaker variety.com/2024/film/revi… Perhaps not as much anticipated as the new Coppola, a new Schrader debuted in competition today. Always a Twitter event. This is a fairly positive review, amongst more unfavorable ones.

‘Three Kilometers To The End Of The World’: Cannes Review screendaily.com/reviews/three-… Debuting in Competition today, sounds like a fascinating film as almost all Romanian films of the last two decades are. Many of the reviews are complimentary about the direction.

'Kinds of Kindness' Review: Emma Stone Reunites With Yorgos Lanthimos hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-r… Debuting in Competition today. Several reviews mention the length, which is worrying, but the cast seems stellar.

The reviews for MEGALOPOLIS are all over the map, which is apparently a direct reflection of the room where it premiered: a long standing ovation with boos. Justin per usual measures out what works and what doesn’t.

'The Girl With the Needle' Review: A Nightmarish Vision of Womanhood variety.com/2024/film/revi… The third film to compete in Competition, this review is by Guy Lodge, one of the critics I highlighted to read. He’s right about SWEAT, everyone should check it out.

This was really good, one of the better films in the festival. The lead performance was tightly controlled, where breakthroughs of emotion were really effective. It could be described as a quiet, small film, but it excels in everything it is trying to do.
