Squeezed in a fun day on the Little Truckee this week with my man Jeremy Miller. High/cold water made for some tough conditions, but San Juan worms and zebra midges still enticed a few healthy-looking fish.
The latest #SEJournalBookShelf reviews Ben Goldfarb’s eye-opening new book, “Crossings,” and the realities of road ecology. sej.org/publications/b…

Honored to be on a panel with the great Beth Pratt and other luminaries at the LA Times Festival of Books at 3 pm today. Going out on a limb here, but I feel like someone miiiiiiight just mention P-22. #roadecology
A new book explores the cognitive dissonance at the core of many Americans’ attitudes toward animals, writes Ben Goldfarb: theatlantic.com/books/archive/…
Highly recommend the audiobook version of THE ANGEL OF ROME, another delightful Jess Walter/Edoardo Ballerini collab. (Julia Whelan is great in this one too.) Would follow those guys anywhere, but especially from Italy to Spokane.
Finally read John Vaillant's magisterial FIRE WEATHER. So many memorable passages, but I especially appreciated the below, on how the industrial fur trade set the stage for an era of fossil fuel extraction & resource colonialism. It always comes back to beavers!
'Beaver dams hold back water & canals spread it out... The result: a verdant valley bottom that doesn’t burn.'
Loved this The Colorado Sun feature on the firefighting skills of our semiaquatic saviors, feat. (who else?) Dr. Emily Fairfax (+ an Eager shoutout).

'Why do some species reside comfortably within our circles of concern, while others squat shivering beyond the firelight?'
For The Atlantic, I reviewed OUR KINDRED CREATURES, a thorough new book on the early history of the animal welfare movement.

'This is one of the most ecologically-intact and functional landscapes on the planet.' — David R. Krause
Huge news on the #roadecology front: Biden administration is set to block the Ambler Road, 211 miles of two-lane gravel through the heart of Alaska.
