World Ranger Day 2020

Today i am addressing a virtual dialogue on waste management across the different spheres of our government. We will unpack the recently approved National Waste Management Strategy along side efforts towards a post covid green stimulus recovery program #wastemanagement.

The National Waste Management Strategy 2020 is aimed at promoting the waste hierarchy and circular economy principles, while achieving both socio-economic benefits and the reduction of negative environmental impacts.

This year our Department embarked on an extensive consultation process to initiate extended producer responsibility schemes with the private sector for the following products: • Paper and Packaging; • Electrical and Electronic Equipment; and • Lighting

We have taken strides to ensure product design changes that embrace circularity for the manufacturing of plastic carrier bags. We have received comments on the amended Regulations. I am pleased that we are moving in the right direction to prevent & manage plastic pollution.

We agree that more needs to be done to support municipalities to comply with landfill infrastructure standards, improve the number of households that have weekly waste collection and actively promote waste diversion from landfill sites.

There also has to be consequences for non-compliance of Municiaplities and local governments that are not managing their waste effectively. #BuildBackBetter

In order to build a waste economy, we need to build a demand for waste.

Thanks to the support from Gift of the Givers we continue our support to three Soup kitchens in Zwelihle, which were original established as relief during the #COVID19 pandemic.

In response to the UN ‘Sustainable Development Goals’ as well as South Africa’s NDP, DEFF has made significant strides towards food waste minimisation and prevention where possible, through various initiatives and partnerships, at both national and international levels.

Reducing food loss and waste can contribute to environmental sustainability by lowering production costs and increasing the efficiency of food systems. A better understanding of environmental and social impacts of products and services is needed. CGCSA

This agreement has facilitated the formation of partnerships through a network of global leaders and innovators that have collaborated, shared knowledge and sought solutions that will address food and plastic waste within the food value chain in South Africa@CGCSA1 Environmentza

Minister Minister of Environment, Forestry & Fisheries 🇿🇦 said the cleanup will tackle the illegal dumping area identified but the Department will work with the Dr Beyers Naude Municipality to introduce a waste management integrated strategy & recycling economic initiatives in this town #WorldFoodDay

Gift of the Givers has drilled boreholes similar to this one at ten schools in Graaff-Reinet. This one at Narsingh Street Primary School is 180 meters deep, produces 20 thousand litres of water per hour and will help irrigate the gardens and trees planted today #WorldFoodDay
