I love it that Chinese has a word, málà, for the specific flavor of the Szechuan pepper. It’s like ǰʰãǰ in Bengali, applied to the unique flavor of strong mustard seeds — but also applied to fizzy drinks. I’ve seen it translated as “pungent”, but that doesn’t really cut it.
