According to a 2015 assessment by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, 564,708 people were homeless. At a minimum, 140,000 or 25 percent of these people were seriously mentally ill. People experiencing homelessness need our help.

From and article by R Brown and A Chatterjee: We found that families experiencing homelessness tend to have poor diets, lacking healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, but high in intake of unhealthy sugars and fats.

Police often are the first (and sometimes the only) point of government contact for persons experiencing homelessness. Although it has been common for police to rely on traditional law enforcement, some agencies have moved away from arrest-focused methods.

The man on the right is a client. He had been sleeping in his car for a week or two, but then it was towed when he was out looking for a job. He’s still looking for work because he has a family to care for, but he has nowhere to sleep. He said his car had been towed.
