Arthi Jayaraman Academia is definitely a place where there is so much rejection and stress. Checking out and taking a real break is not really feasible like in other jobs - our commitments are long term, and there's no 'backup'. I'm sorry it has been a rough week. Sending you cat love.

This week has been one of those where every single day I have received at least one ‘not good’ news.
It doesn’t surprise me that I navigated towards this image 🤓

I just got a proposal declined w. 1 reviewer choosing to critique:
—my entire career (“hard to find track record of impactful work”)
—my life choices (“there appears to be an uninterrupted academic career”)
In 16 years I have had 3 such awful reviews. Why does NSF allow this?

Aditi Jain Preeti Sharma Yes! Thank you!
From many direct communications, I know the sentiment I share above is one many PIs feel in academia but hesitate to share. It is not just students who have difficult days, faculty members & staff do as well!

For every work trip, single parent profs make care arrangements for their kids &/or pets &/or ailing parents.
Costs associated with these arrangements are not reimbursed by work.
But seminar visits are a critical way to disseminate research & representation of your institution.

Today I got to be in the best (administrative) meeting ever! 👏🏽
Every aspect of the meeting was perfect: how the leaders steered the discussion, how they got input from all, asked questions, & chimed in where needed. Everyone left the meeting happy & heard.
Kudos to the leaders!

Arthi Jayaraman Come to Game Changer Academies- that’s exactly why CMMI has created such program. Many PDs join in the discussion sessions.

Edward Maginn Thanks Edward Maginn !
I tell my students this & thus, I follow it myself.
‘It is okay to give oneself 2-4 hours to vent & steam after a bad outcome & then one should let it go.’
I do plan to write to NSF that commenting on a PIs’ personal life choices have no place in reviews.

Arthi Jayaraman Preeti Sharma Yup, I agree. I speak with research scholars often who share the same experience but are unable to express it due to fear of coming across as a negative person. Irony is, everyone would feel better and find quick solutions if they knew of these shared challenges.

Arthi Jayaraman Sorry this happened - it should not have. But I’m not surprised. Don’t let it get to you. There are so many aspects of reviews, funding, and publication that need to change.
