The path of complexity: It's been a long journey but the presses are now running to offer a small curated venue for weird papers that could scare disciplinary journals.

New preprint, comments very welcome. I argue from basic principles of thermo that Jeremy England's 'Statistical physics of self-replication' doesn't provide a thermodynamic bound on replication. In fact, I show that no such bound is possible in principle

Our paper with Jordi and Ricard Solé is out! We consider the problem of finding the nonequilibrium steady state that optimizes free energy harvesting + illustrate it on the amazing photosynthetic bacteriorhodopsin system. A long time in the making ...

How close are living systems to optimal states? In our new paper in Physical Review Research with Artemy Kolchinsky and Jordi we searched for universal bounds to this problem within the context of free energy harvesting, with special attention to molecular machines journals.aps.org/prresearch/pdf…

New work at @PhysReviewResearch. Using stochastic thermodynamics & linear algebra, we find link b/w entropy production and eigenvalues of rate matrix ➡ Tradeoffs for fast relaxations and oscillations. Great collaboration w/ 葉月糸 + Sosuke Ito (伊藤 創祐) journals.aps.org/prresearch/abs…

Algorithmic information theory (AIT) defines information as description length (not statistical uncertainty, as in Shannon's IT). In new work, we combine AIT + stochastic thermodynamics to uncover a new 'algorithmic cost' for thermodynamics of computation journals.aps.org/pre/abstract/1…

Key findings:
✅ Bound on time-reversal asymmetry linked to total cycle affinity.
✅ New thermodynamic bounds on directed fluxes, finite-time cross-correlation, & cycle affinity of coarse-grained dynamics.

A universal relation between the asymmetry of cross correlations and the strength of disequilibrating thermodynamic effects can be regarded as a nonequilibrium generalization of the Onsager reciprocity
