I'm really thrilled to have received a The British Academy fellowship to research Ukraine's multicultural literary heritage! And very grateful to all at UCL School of Slavonic & East European Studies, UCL Research and especially to Vitaly Chernetsky for supporting the project.

Important piece from ⁦⁦Peter Foster⁩ and colleagues at Financial Times - with input from ⁦Russell Group
For me it’s also about what kind of country we want to be. A self-confident country on the global economic stage would seek to attract global talent. on.ft.com/3wjRvt2

At the time, London was the largest and richest city in Europe, and one of its major musical centres. This passage was first published on 29 July 1851. It is about street music in London, displaying Berlioz's usual irony about how professional music in theatres is poorly paid.

Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) was a French composer, critic, and conductor of the Romantic period. He visited London for the Great Exhibition in the summer of 1851 and stayed at 58 Queen Anne Street; it would be the second of five visits he paid the city.

'Why was this cinephile spurned by Hollywood?' Great piece by Lanre Bakare on James Baldwin's love of cinema, rejection by Hollywood and his film criticism that inspired my new Barbican Centre film season 'The Devil Finds Work: James Baldwin Through Film':theguardian.com/film/2024/apr/…

Città irreale [Unreal City], 2019

Excerpt from Cristina Marconi’s award-winning debut novel. Told through the eyes of Alina, a young Italian in search of broader horizons, it is a coming of age story of a generation of Europeans who made their home in the UK capital.
