I’m in the waiting room of urgent care with my daughter and they are playing Milli Vanilli’s “Blame it on the Rain,” of all songs. Weirdly fitting.

First stop of my Taking Funny Music Seriously book tour underway: a chat with my dog about funny pet songs, at home, on my couch. iupress.org/9780253069955/…

This dog is turning 14! He would love to hear from other older dogs—any stories about old dogs learning new tricks? A little birthday inspiration! He himself recently learned how to open the pantry door and get himself some snacks!

Agree. Sometimes, when I think about teaching again full-time, I remember how much I don’t miss this and move on—nope, I’m good. I feel guilty—I want to be there, fighting, but mental health is a real consideration.

Writing can often involve knowing your audience and changing styles depending on the form/platform. With this in mind I was able to author my son’s campaign slogan for the fifth-grade election with Smurf-Cat saying “We live, we love, we vote for Grant.” I’m very proud.

Being middle aged is like one big slumber party. Only there’s no party. You’re just exhausted all the time because you didn’t sleep well the night before or any other night because your friends kept you up and by friends I mean perimenopause.

How do other writers decide what to write? My interests are not always mainstream so I have to think carefully about what other people might want to read. Recently, my daughter (13) was interested in one of my topics (a first). I think this might be my new criterion!

I love writing about music topics that are ignored or dismissed. No surprise that I live in a city that is often dismissed too—among cities in CA, definitely the butt of the most jokes. If this pattern keeps up, I’m going to have to start wearing mom jeans and sporting a mullet!
