Eric Hobsbawm in the Age of Empire writes that many European intellectuals did not believe that a Great War would ever take place, given the extensive financial and commercial ties between nations at the time. Let's hope we are not making the same error of judgement again.

The Guardian reported in 2015 that cyclists in the UK on average experience one "very scary" incident per week. I am happy to say that it's been accurate so far -- shout-out to the X3 line on Abingdon Road!

Very late to the news but my favorite member from the Try Guys is fired for cheating on his wife. It is not an overstatement that I'm devastated.

THREAD: The US government's new export controls are wreaking havoc on China's chip industry. New rules around "US persons" are driving an "industry-wide decapitation."

Sitting at Oxford's DPIR, listening to the Hearts of Iron 4 soundtrack, reading an essay on WWII tripolarity whilst wearing a gown. Life does go well sometimes.

There is a rational way to get out of this. Ease the controls which are so damaging economically and untenable in any case. Use formidable administrative tools China has to vaccinate elderly with vaccines of high efficacy. Call it a whole process democracy and declare victory.

Also hoping against hope that American politicians can have enough sense and decency to keep their mouths shut about these Chinese protests for the next week or so. Nothing they say can possibly make things better—in fact, it’ll almost certainly make things much worse.

Am worried too that some shameless politicians capitalize on the CN protests to shore up their own “tough on the CCP” credential, that would only provide more ammunition to BJ and in turn sabotage the protesters’ efforts

nytimes.com/2023/03/11/opi… An unusually sane and balanced assessment from the NYT editorial gang. There appears to be some growing pushback against the near-hysterical rhetoric of the House Select China Committee. Let’s hope this builds momentum and the administration notices.
