Extremely stimulating, often heated debate between db and Shadi Hamid on global democracy, US hegemony etc. As a historian, I confess to a certain political science allergy, but these are 2 really sharp guys really going at it. Worth your time.

Ok I do have a gripe w/ US political scientists because a good number make arguments like “the US started promoting democracy in Latin America during the 1980s.” Like Central America didn’t exist

Finally found time to read this excellent db essay.

It’s a real indictment of today’s Hollywood and the asset management mentality that’s denying us entertainment that’s actually good, novel, edifying, and interesting.

The piece of the db's 'death of Hollywood' article that I think hasn't gotten enough attention is the observation that despite the recent-ish attempts to promote diversity in writer's rooms, poor and working class writers have been entirely left out. (Short 🧵, probably)

Academic elites have spent the last few years mostly externalizing the threat to freedom ('Donald Trump') while standing passively by as grad workers and contingent faculty suffered the brunt of authoritarian university policies. But that authoritarianism can be turned on anyone.

It also poses a real challenge for liberal academia, caught between its desire for attention from elected Democrats and MSNBC; & its embrace of neoliberal rhetorics of 'care' that depoliticize the demands of students while prompting concern for their treatment.

Did an interview with Think on NPR about Hollywood—talked about a bunch of details that couldn’t make it into my piece think.kera.org/2024/05/03/why…

The article today in the NYTimes about “mid TV” is good so far as it goes but notice there is **zero** mention of the macro financial incentives that gave rise to this type of television—it’s almost like it appeared from nowhere. This ignoring occludes what’s actually going on
