A hill I will die on, and have died on many times: Big Oil is not 'copying Big Tobacco's playbook.' Big Oil is using the playbook Big PR crafted 100+ years ago for every industry that relies on polluting and/or extracting from the commons with impunity to remain profitable

Wow: internal documents show that the oil industry has known *all along* that methane leaks make 'natural' gas a climate disaster, but instead of slowing production, they funded skewed research and PR efforts to pitch it as a climate solution. theguardian.com/us-news/2024/a…

Looking for some from yesterday's G7 Italy Climate, Energy & Environment Ministerial?
Members agreed to:
⬆️int'l public support for transitions
🤝reach an OECD ➡️ Better Policies for Better Lives deal to end export credits to unabated fossil fuels.

The clock is ticking for the G7 to end inefficient fossil fuel subsidies, but ministers in Turin fell short when it comes to breaking 15 years of gridlock.

G7 subsidies reached USD 199 billion in 2022 and phasing out support by 2025 appears unlikely.

📢The G7 has just agreed to phase out coal power by the early 2030s - almost all members are already taking major steps to achieve this goal by 2030, in alignment with 1.5°C pathways.

This is big step for Japan, the only country without a domestic coal phaseout commitment.

Absolutely! Regulators should continue to call the industry bluff.

World Coal Association aka FutureCoal repeatedly states that the coal value chain “needs to understand that the new coal era is abated.”

That means no new coal without CCS + deadlines to retrofit or retire.

.Teresa Ribera 🌹 has been one of the driving forces of the . Her vision, experience and reputation make her an ideal candidate for an Executive Vice President in the next Commission. Thanks to her, Spain is an int. example for an inclusive, just transition.

Today on Volts: US electricity demand is on the rise again, after a 20-year plateau. Does that mean utilities need to build new gas plants? No! I discuss better alternatives with Michelle Solomon & Eric Gimon of Energy Innovation Policy & Technology LLC®.

This is a good question. Why have heat pumps become a bit of a contentious topic in the UK?

I'm late to it, but wanted to have a proper go at answering it...

New Research | 🌏 coal demand is projected to 📉 faster than supply. This exposes coal-exporting countries to market shocks.

With rapid phase-out of coal essential to hold warming to 1.5C, which countries are most vulnerable & how can they achieve a just transition?

So what if every one of those countries made the same 1% argument to justify inaction or slowing down? Lo and behold, they do!

See these headlines below from France, Australia, Canada, Spain, Argentina, all making exactly the same argument...

Unfortunately, there is still a lot of fossil fuel finance from MDBs and the spring meetings did not produce a commitment on this front.

The biggest obstacle to climate action is the fossil fuel industry. The second biggest are the Serious People who accept climate science but say it's unrealistic to cut emissions at the pace experts say is needed.

Did you think methane emissions are now falling?

There is so much talk, science, publicity and momentum on potential to reduce methane.

Yet, on the ground, progress is only just starting🥱⏳
