Reading some papers on 'China strategy.' Since the foreign policy world keeps failing to predict or address so many bad things lately, maybe the best 'strategy' to deal with China is simply to 'do the right thing,' aka, truly prioritize human rights above economic engagement.

Nice thread, just wish the author could have mentioned the enormous crimes the CCP is committing in Xinjiang, Tibet, and to human rights activists. It saddens me that such things often are not at the center when evaluating CCP's governance of China.

We tend to focus on CCP-induced censorship and self-censorship in Western universities, but the true battlefield is in between advanced democracies and poorest countries, and the CCP is winning without much outside noticing in those countries.

Very disappointed but not surprised. Between bottomline and values, international tech companies have consistently chosen bottomline. The HK govt can ban people from singing and listening to the song but it won’t be able to ban it from people’s heart. cnn.com/2024/05/15/med…

The party that is committing the worst crimes against minorities in Asia is all about supporting Asians in America. The hypocrisy is too apparent to worth rebuking, but the fact that the NYC govt was involved in CCP's political manipulation is very concerning.

In which I say if the Chinese government’s past record is of any indication, Zhang Zhan will face continued harassment and surveillance by authorities. But if Zhang's past actions are any indication, she will keep fighting against efforts to silence her. edition.cnn.com/2024/05/13/chi…

Today is the 16th anniversary of the Sichuan earthquake. I was in college in China during the devastating event and experienced firsthand the incredible civil society activism, not just the help people selflessly lent to each other but the attempts to hold the CCP accountable.🕯️

In which I say Google and other tech companies should put their ideals into practice and use all channels to challenge the court order. At the bare minimum, tell the public what the HK authorities asked them to do and how they responded. technologyreview.com/2024/05/09/109…

Prez Emmanuel Macron tried the 'charm-the-strongman' strategy with Trump, and it failed, with Putin, and it failed, now with Xi. Is it self-love that prevents Jupiter from learning? Where are the European leaders whom we need?

Textbook case for how to NOT address 'the China threat,' by Amy Qin & Patricia Mazzei👇 It's frustrating for us who work on countering CCP authoritarianism to see senseless laws and policies like that. It undermines the legitimate concerns about the CCP.

What's up with this totally unnatural Chinese? This man needs more competent China advisors in his team. No wonder he still thinks 'flatter-the-tyrant' strategy works, even after it failed catastrophically with Putin.

I applaud the great activism. My humble suggestion: do it in Chinese so the man can actually understand. I'm sure none in his entourage would dare to tell him what it means... (Here is an article on Xi's low reading comprehension ability even in Chinese: languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=41265)

Not surprised. People don't trust CCP propaganda on domestic news is because they experience the contrary in real life, while it is hard to judge the validity of foreign news fed to them and it's human nature to believe 'they' want to undermine 'us.'

In which I say we should be concerned about Musk’s cosiness with the top Chinese leadership. The CCP cares a great deal about what is said about itself on X, and has a record of leveraging foreign companies’ access to China market for its political agenda. ft.com/content/a62e48…

I'm sure there are still many sensible people inside the system who disagree with Xi. But after Xi's decade of effort to consolidate power in his own hands, what anyone else thinks has become less and less relevant. The 3-year long crazy zero-Covid policy is clear evidence.

Asked by a congressional staffer why the pro-democracy Chinese diaspora doesn't want to engage with the American political process to address CCP's abuses, to which I responded: fear, unfamiliarity, and antipathy.
