Our daughter, Yolanda, turns 16 next month. As a parent, watching her grow into a compassionate, accomplished young woman is bittersweet because she will always be our little girl -- our pride and joy. I couldn't be more proud of the person she has become.

Dad's words ring just as true today as they did when he first spoke them. We must stand united. We must eradicate the triple evils of racism, poverty, and violence.

It’s a mistake to assume that systemic racism is only a problem where you see it manifest. It exists throughout the country and infects every community. My father's goal of eradicating hate is far from achieved.

I believe that there is a path to realize dad’s dream and reach the Promised Land. It begins and ends with unity. We must be strong in our resolve and never surrender from the road ahead.

Dad’s dream was about more than an end to segregation. It was economic. It was social. It was transformative.
