I've never been a fan of battered fish & chips but the smell drifting along the front from all the chippies is very tempting 🏖🍟 ☀️

If anyone in govt, media or politics wants a fitting memorial to Frank Field, then it should be the abolition of the two-child limit.

His last report (as Chair of Work and Pensions) is here.

'No government should accept it.'

Very sorry to read of the death of Frank Field. He will be remembered for many things but as well as encouraging me early in my career I think of his work in defence of BHS pension scheme members which made a huge difference

New polling evidence from Tax Policy Associates and WeThink shows that half the public doesn’t understand a basic principle of income tax: the way that tax rates apply to income above a threshold.

thetimes.co.uk/article/405651… Of course not all pensioners are well off. This means help should be targeted at the poorest through Pension Credit, not given to everyone through the ridiculous triple-lock. By Rachel Mortimer

The Prime Minister must know he can’t scare people into good health, but his words this morning will be chilling for low income families up and down the country who rely on our social security system for help.

Look how UK govt spending and revenues have grown over last 25 years, catching up with other countries.

More catch up on spending than on revenues (despite big increase in latter since 2019).

UK debt moved from well below G7 average to above, and to well above broader average.

There was always an argument for increasing working-age benefits following state pension age rises from 60. I expect there would have been more support for this than, say, campaigns demanding compensation for all women born in the 1950s.

Perhaps it doesn’t matter how generous the Conservatives triple lock increases to state pension have been, you’ll always have people thinking like this
