Why choose between mom guilt and writing guilt when you can have both?

I love showing my kiddos all the fun things you can find in nature! We watched this lady bug for 15 minutes! Academic Mom, PhD

Really enjoyed presenting my Minecraft study to distinguished Emeritus Professor Michael Arbib today from USC!
Being intellectually challenged by such a highly-respected and admirable academic is the best learning curve…

~24 hours before a big deadline and of course our kiddo develops a crazy fever overnight. Thankfully he's better, but that means no daycare for him. #parentsinacademia #mominacademia Academic Mom, PhD
Oh Monday morning.
Starts w youngest missing bus, then email that there is no food option for oldest’s band trip today that they’re not allergic to, 2nd child misses bus. Then car system has to be reset so it will turn on, it’s only 830, can I cancel the day? 🤪 Academic Mom, PhD

My list of saved articles for when I’ve finished my PhD and have time to read academia for pleasure is getting insurmountable. I‘m also starting to wonder if “more spare time” might be a fantasy… #academicchatter #momademia

Oh dear, what a shocking and thought-provoking book this is! Makes you realize what garbage we're eating 🫣
A well-researched, eye-opening book that should be a #MustRead !

Is there a place better than a library to hang out on a rainy morning?
Squish doesn’t think so. Kent District Library is the best.

If you could restart your PhD, what are the things you wish you knew ? Sort of like the hypothetical ‘if you could take 3 things to a desert island’ question. I wrote an article on mine: medium.com/@melissaclaire…

My life had changed drastically since having my little ones, but just as Toby mentions, it has made me a better scientist. I only wished I didn't have to feel that I had to work until the very last minute bc otherwise I wouldn't be competitive. #momademia
I had a fantastic time presenting my PhD work to Prof. Ben Hayden’s research group at BCMHouston 🧠🙌
I feel so inspired by the thought-provoking ideas bounced around on zoom.
Isn’t being a scientist fun?

It was a pretty miserable week: a GI bug hit my house, my baby is sick, & I got an official proposal rejection from NSF + an informal rejection from NASA.
But, I won my department's 'most on the go faculty' award, again. Is it legit to list that as an award on my CV? Academic Mom, PhD
Wonderful piece, thank you for sharing💜
'We are taught that good science requires detachment. But what if being a mother — with all the attachments that entails — allows you to explore different but equally fruitful scientific narratives?'

The wee one has chickenpox so M and I are both WFH half days so we can tag team parenting and work. It's currently my shift working, but all I can hear is the two of them 'singing' and laughing downstairs. So much sunshine and love in this house, even when it's hard. #Momademia
Now the dust has settled from our recent publication nature.com/articles/s4158…, I thought I would share a little of the story from funding, having babies, surviving the pandemic, and celebrating with Yisu Gu, Raquel Bartolomé-Casado, The Powrie Lab and Teichlab #BehindTheData 1/12
