On a writing retreat in Colorado Springs to finish my book on encountering the Catholic faith via children's literature and I might never leave.

Enjoyed this piece by Nadya Williams about the supposed politics of Classical ed. My kids attend a public Classical charter school, where the parents would be surprised (and find laughable) to hear themselves described as they often are in the national discourse.

Had some unexpected adventures tonight but still ended up watching this with the kids like I promised before a work trip tomorroe. Totally delightful. Dave Matthews was the perfect Otis.

After our final and course reflection, my students...clapped. Unasked for. Unexpected. I stood there awkwardly, as one does, when there is unexpected clapping. My heart is aglow-and soon to be caffeinated-as I turn to grading and email.

Waking up to see books destroyed. The way humans express love to each other through song and art smashed. Imagine the awful, incredible, power of this product. The quest to make it. The expressive, human moments of real it'll be used to destroy.

one interesting thing I heard from several students (separately, one at a time) at the end of my intro theology course: 'it was important to be guided in reading original sources of what the popes wrote, directly reading their encyclicals, and not what is said about them'.

I think the most salutary thing I’ve figured out in the last year is that I’m free to respond to terrifying trends in creative ways. I don’t believe in apocalyptic narratives that nothing can change. Such narratives good for business and clicks, bad for freedom and flourishing.

Gave my Sinners, Saints, and Mystics final, submitted the largest grant app I've ever tried for, met with comp students about their essays. Now: enjoying breeze, birds, and chips&salsa on one of my fav San Antonio patios. Finals week hasn't defeated me yet. She says on a Monday.

*Special Mother's Day post today: Mothers in Literature*
Six writers introduce their favorite mother-characters (stretching from ancient literature through the twentieth century).
*DM me for link or look at the bottom of the image,* since Twix looooves to bury 'underpile' posts!

Sometimes we can be so focused on people who don't support us we lose sight of those who do. We can't see an entire village we have because we've let one or two people block our line of sight.

8yo had her first Reconciliation this morning. Having gone through this so recently with my son, I remember being struck at what the kids were prepping to tell the priests, thinking how this must be an interesting day on both sides of the booth. Today, though, seeing my daughter,…
