Lt. Harold Redhead, Attd. 6/Northants and Northampton Town footballer, was commissioned just months after enlisting as a private with the Coldstream Guards in 1915. He was killed in action near Sailly-le-Sec on this day in 1918 and is buried in Dive Copse British Cemetery. #otd

Gunner Edward Bullen was killed in action on this day in 1917. Serving with 312th Bde Royal Garrison Artillery at the time of his death, Warrington-born Bullen played almost 200 games for Bury before the War. He is buried in Vraucourt Copse Cemetery, France.

Brighton & Hove Albion footballer Clement Matthews was killed in action at Gallipoli 107 years ago today. Known as Charlie, the 26-year-old was serving as a private with 1/4th R. Sussex when he was killed by a sniper on 15 August 1915. He is buried in Green Hill Cemetery.

Former Aston Villa footballer Private William Gerrish, 17th Middlesex, was killed on the Somme on this day in 1916. The inside-forward, who also played for Bristol Rovers, Preston and Chesterfield, died during the attack on ZZ Trench west of Guillemont and has no-known grave.

Former Manchester United player Private Oscar Linkson also died during the attack on ZZ Trench launched by the Footballers’ Battalion on this day in 1916. The full-back, who also played for Irish side Shelbourne and QPR, is listed on the next panel to Willie Gerrish at Thiepval.

Another player from the ranks of the Footballers’ Battalion died on this day in 1916. Reading’s Allen Foster was wounded during the assault on ZZ Trench and died later that day at No.5 Casualty Clearing Station, Corbie. He’s buried at Corbie Communal Cemetery Extension.

On 10 August 1917 a new attack was mounted. The 25th Division moved ahead along with it, on the left flank, towards Westhoek. Only the hamlet of Westhoek on the left flank of the attack could be held, afterwards giving its name to the advance.
