What a shameful way for NPR to deal with thoughtful criticism by a long time insider. A news organization that responds to criticism by firing the heretic should wonder whether the orthodoxy it worships has led it to dark places.

This interview of Uri Berliner by David Folkenflik is incredible. There is a sense that the insider, Folkenflik, is transgressing by talking to the newly excommunicated Berliner. A sample:

Jay Bhattacharya Uri Berliner David Folkenflik I thought the piece by Uri Berliner was brave, clear, honest and necessary. It also clearly seemed to be grounds for dismissal or suspension. My husband works for a large hi-tech company and if he went public with his criticisms of it, he wd be fired - even if they were correct.

Ann Bauer Uri Berliner David Folkenflik Before any such act of honest protest -- satyagraha -- one should count the costs and be willing to pay them, which I assume Uri Berliner has.

As far as NPR, it's one thing for a private firm in high tech to worry about its brand and to control public utterances of employees.

Jay Bhattacharya Uri Berliner David Folkenflik Yeah, it's a tricky area. You'd like NPR to behave the way a land-grant university should...except land-grant universities no longer do. They answer to their donors, patrons and student interest groups.

NPR is a political/ideological imitation of a nonprofit & acted as such.
