Sadden to hear about these deaths that were preventable. Important reminder of how deadly whooping cough can be for the vulnerable. It is difficult to stop these infections, so vaccinations, especially for pregnant mums, are vital to protect newborns. Vaccines save lives.

This is why I'm *really* worried about the record high alcohol-specific deaths figures that ONS published yesterday.

We modelled the impact of increases in drinking during the pandemic on health, and what's happened is much worse than our worst case scenario (those dots😬).

ONS have published alcohol-specific deaths data for 2022 for England & Wales today, so we now have data for the whole of the UK. The picture is pretty grim, with deaths surpassing 10,000 for the first time on record - up 32.8% since 2019.

Excellent editorial reflecting on the problem of 'expert' outsiders parachuting in, disrespecting local expertise & stakeholders, & taking the credit for work done locally. Happens all too often internationally and within countries too. Neocolonialism in action.
