Politicians in Jersey have unwaveringly approved, by a commanding vote of 32 to 14, the provision for terminally ill individuals with six months or fewer left to live to receive assistance in dying.

Breaking: Wonderful news that Jersey has just voted to allow assisted dying for terminally ill! Sad that they voted (58% to 42%) not to include those not terminal but incurably suffering BUT nonetheless this is a massive step forward for dignity, compassion, and choice.

This is the fifth General Election I will have seen as Chief Executive at Humanists UK so I know how hard our public affairs team will be working to produce the expert policy briefings they’re known for and to hold candidates to account on our issues. Thanks in advance to them!

A majority of Jersey politicians however voted not to include people who are not terminally ill. Humanists UK and Channel Islands Humanists are disappointed with this, as it is out of step with Jersey’s citizens’ jury and the needs of some of those who are suffering the most.

This will be extended to twelve months for people with neurodegenerative conditions. Individuals must be mentally competent throughout the process, and they must have a clear and settled wish to die. There will be strict safeguards to prevent abuse and ensure informed consent.

A significant majority of 31 Assembly members vote in favour, with just 15 against, representing a shift towards a more humane approach to end-of-life care. The proposals will allow terminally ill adults with six months or fewer left to live the right to die.

Welcome news: Humanists UK has long called for the Govt to issue guidance on managing blasphemy-related incidents in schools. Blasphemy isn't a crime & teachers certainly shouldn't be forced into hiding or face automatic suspension. humanists.uk/2024/05/21/cal…
