I was signing at McNally Jackson and ran into this giant! She was signing her newest, A BOOK OF DAYS. 1 thing I love about Patti Smith is that her art is always a call—to action, to love, to life. Her voice is at times gentle, at times fierce and the world is richer for it.

I understand why the multiracial cast bothers some viewers in terms of historicity. But it doesn’t bother me any more than all the English accents. I view it as an ensemble cast performing a universal story — like a Shakespearean troupe. Or Denzel doing Macbeth.
