Last week I had to call a code blue on an outpatient I was seeing. He had only been out of acute care for a week when he coded in my clinic. Part of why he coded was because he had been discharged too soon and was failing at home.

Patients are being discharged so much sicker/fragile than they used to be because there simply aren't enough resources in #Alberta to provide comprehensive medical care for as long as the patient may require it in hospital. So they are sent home.

This gentleman was sent home with his elderly wife providing all of his care. This is an elderly man who went into hospital with COPD exacerbation but then contracted COVID IN HOSPITAL. But the second he was stable enough to bump, they needed the bed so he went home.

A week later I had to send him back to acute care in an ambulance. He has been admitted. IF the UCP would properly fund healthcare and would stop chasing away HCWs, they would have saved themselves the cost of his ambulance and readmission.
