In the subconscious of the state and the ruler in Iran today, these precedents are not merely “tales of the ancients,” but rather represent a historical problem of linking the system to the individual ruler and the void after his departure.

Iran has seen major transformations due to power vacuums in its modern history. Governing minds may draw parallels to events like the fall of the Qajar dynasty in the 1920s, the collapse of the Safavid state, and the upheavals of the Afshar and Zand dynasties.

Despite losing military leaders, nuclear scientists, statesmen, clerics and, most recently, a president and foreign minister, the country always seems able to regain its balance and move forward with those who remain.

In this piece I delve into Iran’s history comparing between what was before the revolution and the current complex structure that don’t prevent a strong ruler, but separate his life and death from the existence of the system.
