This is the daybook of John Cadbury who went on to found a certain famous Birmingham Chocolate Factory. Before this, he began by selling tea, coffee and other luxury items from a shop in Bull Street and this is the first daybook from this enterprise… [2/5]

The first page shows the date as “3 mo. 4th 1824” which was the dating convention used by Quakers at this time. It also lists the customers and shows some of notable names in Birmingham such as Samuel Galton, Samuel Lloyd and Richard Cadbury… [3/5]

As well as providing a wonderful snapshot into the formation of this business it is also useful to see the availability and cost of these desirable commodities in early 19th Century Birmingham. Listings include fine coffee, green tea & cocoa nibs... [4/5]
