My latest report looking at under Tinubu, his style, decision making and what that portends for the economy and Nigeria’s petroleum sector.

Can famine in be prevented? Yes.

But we need the militaries on all sides to give us humanitarian access.

It's the trajectory of the war and the commanders on the ground who are blocking the access we desperately need.

I offer some perspectives with my CSIS colleagues on how NATO might approach re-engaging with its southern neighbors. In the Sahel, that means understanding and overcoming its legacy of aggressive action in Libya and the chaos that generated to the south csis.org/analysis/nato-…

Tinubu seeks help of Senegalese President to bring Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso back to ECOWAS...but he should probably be convincing Faye not to take Senegal out of ECOWAS. pmnewsnigeria.com/2024/05/17/tin…

Seemingly underreported in narratives Im reading about the fighting in/around Fasher is this growing role of civilians standing up to defend themselves against the coming RSF onslaught. Some with guns, others with just sticks, they will not be lambs to the slaughter. Powerful!

An interesting argument to invest in Sudan's ag sector rather than focusing on humanitarian aid in the long term. devex.com/news/opinion-a…

Im sharing not because I believe these arguments, but because I think this viewpoint is growing more dominant among the decisionmakers who matter to 's future. 'Sudan is destroyed and we cant undo it so our focus now should just be on great powers.' gatestoneinstitute.org/20640/sudan-co…

This feels like political gotcha. Some political reporter should find out the % of times a White House head of state visit also includes a joint address to Congress. Has to be far below 50%

Senegal's PM asserting his country's 'strategic autonomy,' a phrase I have heard recently from several West African leaders, in pushing back against French troops in Senegal, use of the FCFA, Western LGBT campaigns and improving ties to Sahelian states. reuters.com/world/africa/s…

Im not sure how yesterday's sanctions are the 'first step' toward accountability when the Administration has imposed sanctions 5 times since the start of the war in to absolutely no effect. They are yet another ineffective step targeting the wrong people, but whatevs.

That's how you whitewash a fraudulent election. Now we can restart our security assistance and go back to business as usual. Yet another scandalous and embarrassing abdication of anything approaching our values in Africa.

I will be curious to the reactions to this article from Nahal Toosi looking at the effectiveness of African diplomats in DC. But this is a hard fact to overcome: 'Despite Africa’s potential, it’s just not high on Washington’s priority list.' politi.co/3WLLujo

Disillusion grows in Kenya as Biden hosts Ruto for a historic state visit. “Ruto has spent a lot of time on the world stage, but unless benefits of all that travel begin to accrue to people other than Ruto himself he is likely to face mounting discontent.' semafor.com/article/05/16/…
