Semi-regular reminder that the concept of 'directional shear' is largely irrelevant to severe storm forecasting. Hodograph shape (length/curvature) is what matters because that dictates the magnitude of the near-surface streamwise vorticity.

Spent the afternoon w/ my son’s 3rd grade class (wearing Girls Who Chase gear of course). They saw a wx balloon, learned how t-storms form & produce lightning. Then, by son’s request, I showed two of Paul M Smith’s sprite & blue jet videos. We ended w/ storm safety. So fun!

Rear-inflow jet evident on the Lake Charles VWP as the bow echo passed this morning.

Fulfilling a dream that began while a little kid in Dallas, looking at #eclipse paths in World Book Encyclopedia. I only had to live to see it, if possible.

The joy of this moment was overwhelming.

Y’all, my feed is filled with scientists, photographers, science enthusiasts, and non-science people alike. How cool is it that at least for a few moments, everyone was sharing in the joy and wonder that is our sky, planet, universe? More of this all the time please!
