I'm glad this crackdown didn't go on when Trump was president, because Democratic politicians would have been invoking Alexander Hamilton in opposition and my head would have exploded.

Mayors love to blame 'outside agitators' for protests: reason.com/2020/06/01/the… But read the whole thread: Adams is going above & beyond in infantilizing the protesters ('these are our children') and claiming that mysterious foreign forces are manipulating them.

I don't think the force has been effectively under civil control for a long time, but in this case the Chief's position doesn't seem to depart from the mayor's policy.

I think somewhere in the 1760s or 70s Burke--'father of conservatism'--tried to tell Parliament that if you can't get American juries to to deliver guilty verdicts in open-and-shut treason cases, you've got problems that invoking the summary death-penalty statute can't solve.
