Who can pass up a juicy prickly pear? Gila woodpeckers are desert specialists, and while they eat insects and tap-tap-tap into tree trunks (and cacti) like other woodpeckers, they also love to snack on a ripe piece of fruit. 📷: Mick Thompson CC BY-NC 2.0 flic.kr/p/2hPnJtn

Snow bunny. How do cottontail rabbits handle cold temperatures? These adaptable mammals are active year-round & do not hibernate. Instead, they grow thicker coats & seek additional shelter in shrubs, brush piles, or other sheltered areas. 📸Courtney Celley/USFWS

Notice any green this winter? Some species of moss refuse to let the dark of winter steal its bright green vibe. As long as the surface is moist and exposed, moss can photosynthesize all year, even under the snow. Keep a look out for some pop of color this winter!

Barred owls make a variety of interesting sounds – some of which sound a little like laughing. Their most famous call consists of 8-9 notes and sounds similar to “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you, all?”. 📸Grayson Smith/USFWS
