Last night Washingtonian Guild turned out to the Washingtonian Most Powerful Women event to share OUR voices and advocate for living wages and other policies to address our serious gender pay gap problem.

Let CEO Merrill Williams know you stand with the women of Washingtonian Guild!

*looks at notes* so we have a women-owned business that is throwing an event celebrating women while it actually subjects many of its female employees to unfair and unlivable salaries?

do better Washingtonian 🌸

The women of Washingtonian Guild deserve to be paid enough to raise families, live in the region they cover, and afford basic essentials. I couldn’t do any of that on my $38k salary there.

This talented staff deserves better.

I worked with so many smart, thoughtful, insanely talented women writers, editors, photographers and designers at Washingtonian. They deserve more.

Read that again: The HIGHEST PAID woman in the union makes the same as the LOWEST paid man.

Merrill Williams cannot claim to support women in the community and brag about her woman-owned business while failing her own female staff.

THIS IS SO DISGUSTING!! If I was a man at Washingtonian 🌸 I’d be making a livable wage. SHOCKING for a women owned business to claim they celebrate women while refusing to pay them??! Make it make sense.

The financial stress of working at Washingtonian destroyed my mental and physical health. I was constantly sick from stress but had little to no time off.

The talented staff of this magazine deserves better.

& a note on salary transparency: I came to Washingtonian straight after 👩‍🎓 and was shocked by my raise when moving to a new org. I had no idea how much I was being underpaid, and Washingtonian Guild and others are doing amazing work to make this industry fairer for everyone

folks always told me it’d be harder to get paid focusing on social issues. But I left my Washingtonian job (which I loved!) after 6 mos to cover enviro justice at a *much* smaller newsroom that offered me ~10k more

Solidarity with Washingtonian Guild! During my time at Washingtonian in 2017, I struggled to make ends meet—my rent was almost my entire monthly income and I volunteered to work events and write dining stories for free meals. Situations like this harm our whole industry.
