These pinkish structures are sclerotia of Typhula incarnata, one of the snow mold fungi that we frequently observe this time of year, especially in areas with lighter soils. On wheat it's more of a crown rot and not very damaging; however, it can be lethal on winter barley.

Rarely does news on a wheat disease make it to Nature: Wheat disease’s global spread concerns researchers nature.com/articles/d4158…. Note that it took over 30 years for the disease to make its first jump to Bangladesh; we are watching in the US.

Stripe rust update: stripe rust is widespread in eastern Washington and its appearance is the earliest since 2011, raising concerns for the current wheat crop. See my recommendations in a new Timely Topic posted today smallgrains.wsu.edu/stripe-rust-24/. #WSUsmallgrains

Stripe Rust Update: Dr. Chen reports that stripe rust continues to spread in winter wheat nurseries near Pullman, but that incidence in commercial fields is very low. Three fields in Franklin County had less than 1% rust. Be watchful and continue scouting.
