Today, from the animal health dictionary: animal welfare. We are working towards a world where the welfare of animals is respected, promoted and advanced, in ways that complements animal health, human well-being, socio-economic development and environmental sustainability.

Strict biosecurity measures and good hygiene practices are essential to prevent #AvianInfluenza outbreaks, because of the resistance of the virus in the environment, and its highly contagious nature.

While #AvianInfluenza primarily affects poultry and wild birds, it has occasionally infected mammals, including humans. This could indicate an increased risk of the viruses becoming better adapted to mammals, and potentially spilling over to humans and other livestock.

Avian influenza global situation highlights for 17/02 to 15/03/24:
- Unprecedented milestone: disease detected for the first time on Antarctica's mainland.
-21 outbreaks in poultry, 62 in non-poultry birds in 20 countries.
-405,000 poultry birds died/culled, mostly in Europe.

Global #AfricanSwineFever highlights for 19/02 to 10/03/24:
- 2 countries in Europe reported new outbreaks.
- Albania reported #ASF for the first time.
- Asia, Africa, Americas, and Oceania reported no outbreaks.
- 408 domestic pigs were lost due to ASF.

This year for #WorldAquaticAnimal Day, we're talking about the barriers that countries encounter when it comes to better aquatic animal health. We encourage countries to accord higher priority, invest more, and develop stronger legislation to secure the future of aquatic animals.

Human decisions, such as industrial farming, can potentially impact #wildlife health and conservation efforts. In the case of Kruger National Park, we see that not only livestock can pose a danger to wildlife, but also how a human diseases can impact animals negatively.
