Only takes a few hundred ticketbuyers to sell out two screenings at Chicago's Gene Siskel Film Center, and those are fortunate people: I caught 'The Art of the Benshi' the other night at BAM and it is a pearl. chicagotribune.com/2024/04/11/the…

Benshi performers Ichirō Kataoka and Kumiko Ōmori tell hyperallergic about the conventions and challenges of the Japanese art of narrating silent films. They will be here Apr. 19–21 for “The Art of the Benshi,” organized by the Archive & Yanai Initiative. hyperallergic.com/899506/benshi-…

I enjoyed Art of the Benshi at BAM Film so much I went back again!

Hideyuki Yamashiro, Kumiko Ōmori + Ichirō Kataoka made a perfect ensemble. I can't imagine any film buff who wouldn't enjoy these programs.

Catch the tour if you can! artofthebenshi.org

Benshi Kumiko Ōmori's witty, fourth-wall-breaking narration for OUR PET (1924) was the highlight of Art of the Benshi at BAM for me.

Hundreds of people laughing and cheering for Diana Serra Cary's Baby Peggy a century later was extraordinarily moving.

The UCLA Film & Television Archive is hosting a remembrance tribute to the late Bob Butler this Saturday at the Billy Wilder Theater. It was a pleasure to know Bob- perhaps the most consequential director in television history. I look forward to being there.

Everything you could possibly want from a movie about LA. The new restoration looks incredible. A joy to scour every shot for 1962 street signs and restaurants.
