This was a small outpost which stood close to the tidal basin today, and later the Ridley Arms at North Blyth. To get here, you'd cross a small ford over the silter…

A newly discovered door, dating to around the 1790's has been found in St John's Tower during our preparations for the ‘Dover Castle Under Siege’ experience that opens in July.

15 May 1464 The Battle of Hexham. Not a large battle, it was a significant win for the Yorkists. Lord Montagu faced the Duke of Somerset & won. Somerset was captured & executed the next day at Hexham and his captains, the lords Roos and Hungerford, a day or so later.

You need X-ray vision to see this extraordinary medieval “Wheel of Fortune” design on an 18th century gravestone. The figures on the “wheel” illustrate life’s journey. The design and possible meaning are further explained below.
