Societies usually descend into illiberalism because of crisis or conflict (for instance, the U.S. effectively became a police state during the First World War). But right now, Canada is dismantling civil liberties for no apparent reason other than its elites are bored.

In the same vein, I suspect my parents have a robust sex life, but I'm extremely grateful I never have to hear about it. I would entreat the rest of society to follow their example.

I'm feeling MIGHTY smug about driving a diesel. 20 cent spread with gasoline on Vancouver Island right now. AND it's 25 per cent more efficient. I'm basically driving for free.

I'd say the most troubling part of the last two years is seeing just how much of Canadian officialdom wouldn't even blink at turning this country isn't a deeply illiberal place. I used to think 'not turning Canada into an authoritarian hell' was a shared value.

If only universities had the slightest idea of what would happen to them if their government funding was subject to public referendum.

If I was a universally liked celebrity like Paul McCartney or Tom Hanks, I would find one random person to which I'd act like an absolutely over-the-top prick for no reason whatsoever. Not only would it be shocking, but nobody would believe them.

I think about this a lot. On the list of reasons as to why you would start a country with a centralized government, 'hand $2.4 billion to AI research' wouldn't even make the top 1000. The reasons you WOULD do it are all the things that Ottawa is enthusiastically neglecting.

Which means that if you're a power-hungry psycho who wants to ram through evidence-free madness for nine years (except going in a rightward direction this time), now is your time. Let's call this person Bizarro Trudeau.
