Thank you Nate Erskine-Smith for visiting us again, and listening to Northern rural concerns. We need an OLP with competent, compassionate leadership that acts with integrity. That’s why I’m behind you.

Influenza season is here. Protect yourself and others by getting your flu shot from a participating pharmacy or primary care provider in the community. Today, members of the OHA rolled up their sleeves for their annual vaccination.

Our hospital system continues to be fragile. With this triple threat and so many worn out frontline healthcare workers, we need the public’s help now more than ever. Please, please wear a mask, stay home when you are sick, and sanitize your hands as often as possible!

Exhausted healthcare heroes, to say nothing of our children, need us all to be responsible and vigilant as this “three headed monster” puts even more strain on our system. Stay home when sick, mask up when indoors, and wash your hands often.

I live and work in Robinson-Huron Treaty Territory and know the TRCC reminded us we are all Treaty peoples. Some argue Treaties are Canada’s first constitution. This Treaty Week is a great time learn about the Treaty where you live. The Anishinabek Nation has shared good resources:

It takes a lot to get me angry. Stealing food from the homeless, dancing on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, desecrating Terry Fox's memory, flying Nazi and Confederate flags in my province and at the nation's capital... Yeah, I'm angry and I know you are too.

Very sad to hear about the passing of Archbishop Desmond Tutu. He leaves behind an incredible legacy of fighting for justice, and an example to follow for people around the world. My condolences to his family.

We can’t vaccinate our way out of the 5th wave, but it’s an incredibly important tool to blunt it. Please get vaccinated, wear a mask, keep your distance, and limit exposure to those outside your household.

With all new variants I think the precautionary approach should prevail. I wish the gov’t of Ontario did too. We are now putting in poorly considered half measures for an airborne virus that is in its most transmissible form yet, all a week before Christmas.

I often think about this quote and its profound truth:

“Sometimes people try to destroy you, precisely because they recognize your power — not because they don’t see it, but because they see it and they don’t want it to exist.”

We need more access to these kits in the north and rural north in particular. This is an important tool to keep out communities safe.

Stable and predictable funding is key for capacity to respond to public health emergencies. Municipalities are important partners and funders of local public health agencies, but the Government of Ontario needs to step up too. cbc.ca/news/canada/su…

Violence against women has only increased during the pandemic. This year 58 women and girls have been murdered by men in Ontario alone. We need to say these names to remember, but we must all take action to stop this on-going violence.

Ontario needs a mature discussion on post secondary capacity. Laurentian University is crisis created by perverse incentives and lack of capacity planning. Post secondary education is too important to be left to market based approaches.

Doug Ford has been abusing his power with Ministerial Zoning Orders to bypass environmental protections and reward his rich friends. An Ontario Liberal Party | Parti Libéral de l'Ontario government will scrap MZOs, while fast-tracking affordable housing and nonprofit nursing homes.
