The Lactobacillaceae (lactobacilli) occupy a unique role in microbiology due to their role in both human history and biology. Enjoyed writing this 'Microbe Profile' about this bacterial family with Paul O'Toole from Microbiology UCC and APC Microbiome Ireland.

Happy to share this work on microbial degradation of spruce bark. Did you know bark is enriched in toxic molecules that only few species can tackle? Special kudos of course to Amanda Ristinmaa who recently defended her PhD thesis on the subject!

Wow!!!! Congrats to all involved. A real self-driving lab with robots that are ML trained on literature (+thermodynamic rules) to perform synthesis of new materials based on DeepMind ML predictions. Berkeley Lab nature.com/articles/s4158…
So this is pretty cool. We do have a few studies that have produce MAGs from corals, but the read data is >90% coral host. I know of several labs that have spent years trying to come up with a microbial enrichment protocol. Nice to see one published! Nice work Ashley M. Dungan, PhD (she/her)!
The job ads for two PhD positions and one postdoc position (4 years) in the MMOB group (Rinke lab) Universität Innsbruck are now online!😀

Such a huge honour to receive an European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant #ERCCoG to explore the enigma of oxidative lignocellulose degradation in anaerobic environments.
Big thanks to everyone who has made this success possible!

You can increase your life expectancy by up to 10 years eating a healthy diet. Interestingly, food groups associated with longevity also influence your gut microbiome. If interested how that impact healths, read our review in Cell Host & Microbe from 2022. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
