“After decades of campaigning by local activists and increased efforts by the IHRA and others, the pig farm was purchased by the Czech government and acquired by the Museum of Romani Culture in Brno,” said IHRA Chair, Lord (Eric) Pickles at the recent opening of Lety Memorial.

Lety u Písku was a site of the genocide of the Roma where entire families of Moravian and Czech Roma and Sinti passed through, before being deported to Auschwitz II-Birkenau. During the 1970s, an industrial pig farm, occupying the entire area of the former camp was built.

During WW2, Lety in present-day Czechia was a concentration camp in which Roma and Sinti were detained. The Nazis and their Czech gendarme collaborators made Lety a Hell on Earth. Most were transferred to the killing camps in Nazi-occupied Poland, and few survived. Conditions…

I ove godine sudjelujemo na komemoraciji u Jasenovcu. Odajemo počast nevinim žrtvama i osuđujemo zločine ustaškog režima. Hrvatska je temu budućnosti sjećanja stavila u fokus svog predsjedanja IHRA, što se odnosi i na obrazovanje mladih o zločinima totalitarnih sustava.

We engaged in thought-provoking discussions on the real problem of Holocaust distortion. Together with MPs, NGOs, Holocaust history experts, plus researchers from the Elie Wiesel Institute and IHRA we explored strategies to combat distortion and promote historical accuracy.

“The history of the Holocaust in Romania was hidden under the rug for a certain time, echoing messages of denial. Today, you will learn about this denial and distortion,” said Alexandru Florian, director of the Elie Wiesel National Institute for the Study of the Holocaust.
