Tara Deshpande This is made of brass.
My ancestors used to make copper vessels including this idly cooker which was named 'Thonduru' in different shapes with multi uses. Tinning them once a few years was the norm.

Tara Deshpande Thanks. It is truly a remarkable map. I have seen many maps ( refer Asiatic Library), I have a doubt whether this map is of 1764 vintage. The seven islands were sort of conjoined after a lengthy process of reclamation from the tides. It could be of later date. Perhaps I am wrong.

Tara Deshpande If it feels heavier, maybe Bronze, but Bronze doesn't need tinplating. If it needs tinplating, it's Brass, but maybe a different composition of Brass. Generally people think of Brass as single composition alloy, but it's a family name of Copper Zinc alloys of various compositions

Kalbadevi has two kalai walas I use- they sit inside the copper cookware shops. 022-3441073 Mohammed Chacha is very good also.

I keep thinking it’s brass but it feels very dense and is extremely heavy so am wondering if it’s kansa
But Kansa vessels don’t generally have tin plating no?

One sad aspect of hyper-polarization in India is the declining credibility of economists. Many of the most prominent Indian economists are clearly camp followers of one or the other major party. When was the last time you saw an economist regarded as pro-Modi criticize three…
