We already know that weight loss reduces risk of:

➡️diabetes
➡️heart disease
➡️sleep apnea
➡️other stuff

In trials of the new weight loss drugs and these things, the only q is whether they reduce risk INDEPENDENT of weight loss.

Otherwise, kinda silly.

Bob Graham was funny, smart, civic-minded and magnificently weird. RIP to a great guy and a Florida original. I once profiled him for his family’s paper. washingtonpost.com/archive/lifest…

On Oct. 24, 1975, 90% of the women in Iceland participated in a gender equality protest - they refused to work, cook, or take care of kids.

There's a new documentary about it - The Day Iceland Stood Still - and I can't wait to see it.

Speaking of trade-offs between animal welfare & enviro impact ...

Here's a study of pigs illustrating it.

But there were some systems that had high welfare standards AND low enviro impact. But no one label described them - it's all details.

Food production is all trade-offs, all the time.

EG: improving animal welfare often increases enviro impact.

Systems that give animals more room, or grow them more slowly, increase GHG & land use.

Excellent new World Resources Inst/Richard Waite paper.

My grandfather, a Jewish immigrant from Eastern Europe, had no patience for people carping about paying income taxes.

'You should get on your knees, kiss the ground, and give thanks you're here to pay them,' he'd say.

I try to remember that when I write the checks every year.

3 things everyone wants to be good for the climate, but aren't, in order of their badness for the climate:

1. grass-fed beef
2. organics
3. local food

They ALL have other advantages! They're not bad things, they're just bad in the GHG equation.

The USDA is paying farmers for cover-cropping & no-till.

Both those practices have enviro benefits, so that's good (I think).

But neither reliably stores soil carbon, so billing it as a GHG win is bad.

This phrasing is useful because it highlights the primary study outcome & clarifies that low-carb diet first made the low-fat look “better” (& vice versa) by only a nonsignficant ~150 kcal/d (P=0.3) compared to the overall diet difference that amounted to ~700 kcal/d (P<0.0001).

What should schools do about childhood obesity when there are zero - count 'em ZERO - interventions, either school- or home-based, that work?

The only effective program I've seen has to be implemented community-wide.
