Wet and windy weather has prevented much ringing recently, so it was great to finally get out and catch migrants on a beautiful spring morning! Highlights included the first willow warblers of the year, as well as a blackcap with a spectacular pollen horn from the continent.

The garden moth trap (Caversham, Berks) seems very slow to get going this spring. Only three moths this morning, one the ever present Hebrew character, and two Brindled Beauty. I’m sure it will pick up soon!

Amazed to find this beautiful female Black Oil Beetle - Meloe proscarabaeus in my south Oxfordshire garden this afternoon.

I introduce you to the first 2 stages of the 'shapeshifter' leaves of Greater Water-parsnip Sium latifolium. Underwater winter lvs finely divided brownish in the background. Surging up out of the water are the first stage aerial leaves, fern-like v pretty, 1-pinnate ones next...
