City of Hobart just voted down social housing for homeless women over concerns about height and car parking!

Planning reform is necessary for any ambitious social housing project.

it's so crazy to me that people in rich suburbs don't seem to realise how dependent they are on low- and middle-income workers for their lifestyles. do you really want your nurses, aged care workers, baristas, cleaners, childcare educators commuting 2+ hours a day????

Of course not. Eastern and Northern Sydney Councils don't want to build housing and they fight housing, pushing the burden out west. This has led to NSW underbuilding QLD & VIC for decades now, making housing there more expensive than elsewhere.

In a world where planning wasn't a barrier but input costs are, we'd expect to see construction shifting to the parts of the country where housing is most expensive - we'd expect to see huge housing production in Sydney, particularly eastern Sydney.

Every couple of days, we get these new takes suggesting that national changes in construction input costs - increased labour, financing and material costs - are the actual reason why housing is expensive. These don't square with radically different construction rates nationally.

Interesting how upfront local businesses are about using the planning system to crush competition.

Wild that other community groups are repeating Coorey’s bizarre and offensive statements instead of rejecting or ignoring them. This one has the ear of a number of Ku-ring-gai councillors.

Heritage policy (and Randwick council especially) is a complete disgrace.

'Maybe the first dentist in Coogee' is such a transparently invented rationale that no one can deny it's just a bad faith effort to stop homes being built.

Make councils pay for this rubbish.

Underreported element of Senator Andrew Bragg’s recent speech is acknowledgement of the evidence that planning is a key driver of our housing crisis.

Other parts reasonable minds may disagree with (esp superannuation policy) but do give this a read:
