I finally found people who see the brilliance of this piece, who appreciate a good critique for what it is. Evening made!

And thank you Sumana Roy for writing this and how!

is just lovely, but even better has been the scale & intensity of engagement it has provoked from lovers and critics alike.

Sumana Roy's in the The Indian Express today -- incisive, delightful & scathing, all at the same time -- is my favourite thus far 🌸🪻🪷

No matter how important and well-intentioned a film is, it is never above critique. I wish those who were dragging people who didn't like Laapataa Ladies read this perspective.

'an Aamir Khan Productions version of the utopian Indian village imagined by those who have never lived in a village'. Fantasies of the rural have been a powerful propelling force for all kinds of activists and activism in India, from leftists to feminists (to queer, as I show).

Since I am not as articulate as the author, all I can say is: This perspective ❤️

Absolutely thrilled to find an entire section on Bhuwaneshwar in Sumana Roy’s moving and poignant homage to Indian provinces and provincials.

We loved but essential to be aware of the ground reality.

Like Sumana Roy says in her article,
'.. a fantasy, an Aamir Khan Productions version of the utopian Indian village imagined by those who have never lived in a village'

Insightful & engaging, I found this piece a necessary corrective to the overwhelming impression of how 'feel-good' the film is (for me too! I loved it).

Agree 100% that it's a fantasy vision of rural India but I would not say that patriarchy has been defeated/overcome in the end

Interesting reading by Sumana Roy. I enjoyed watching Laapataa Ladies. The point of engaging with popular cinema is to try to inspect what appeals to us about it. The contradiction is real; it must be sharpened with analysis.
