We're NOT going back ... to taking pollsters seriously. "Never again! Never again! Never again," as one of the candidates used to say about the other.

I have, of course, been familiar w KamenicaGentzkow2011 since I was "born" (in @doronravid's language of "kindergarten convex analysis" & so on). But the older it gets in my mind - the more I know - the more significant it seems to me, instead of less. (1/2)

I was very sad to find this out. We all have fond memories of hallway conversations with Prof. S. He was a fun and friendly person, and cared deeply about teaching and students.

Humbled to be back to my (almost) alma mater Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata for a talk. I spoke about screening knowledge with verifiable evidence. Interactions with members of the theory group were so energizing! A big thanku to my friend and mentor Prof. Souvik Roy for making this happen.

Understanding a set = understanding its boundaries. Maybe that's why, to even begin to learn *something* abt human nature, you must be pushed to its boundaries - i.e. experience severe existential threats, suffering etc. - a point made by many thinkers across time and geography.

It seems that the cultural differences between the East and the West are a lot less "innate", and a lot more driven by differences in economic structures, than it might seem. Those structures are in turn the result of the (predictable) domino effects of industrial revolution.
