Four cold-causing coronaviruses may provide clues to COVID’s future | Science |…. Interesting debate from both sides. There has been a trajectory for SARS CoV2… now we need to understand if it continues and what it means in vivo. science.org/content/articl…

You cannot make this up: a 50cm eastern brown snake — considered the second most venomous snake in the world — interrupted the Thiem-McCabe qualifying battle in Brisbane 😳

Dr Ellie Murray, ScD What non-respiratory organs does SARS-CoV-2 infect and how frequently? How long do these active, non-respiratory infections last, and what effect do they have on its evolution? How many of the variants we've seen evolved in the GI tract or other organs during chronic infections?

Ryan Hisner Stuart Turville THIS is why variant trackers who research, collaborate and respectfully communicate will go down in history as integral to figuring out important pieces of the novel Covid epidemic puzzle.

Thank you for your research.
And generosity.

We call sublineages that have a combination of Spike mutations L455F and F456L FLip.

There are many of those!
DV.7.1 (BA.2.75*/CH.1.1*)
JF.1 (XBB.1.16.6*)
GW.5 (XBB.1.19*)
XBB.1.5.70/GK, JD.1.1 (XBB.1.5*)
FL.15 (XBB.1.9.1)
HK.3, JG.3 (EG.5.1*/XBB.1.9.2)
XCH.1
Plus unnamed ones.

There were also 4 BA.2.86 (not .1) found in NSW/Australia (1 from week 37, 3 from week 38).

And the EG.5.1 growing seems partly due to its sublineage HK.3, which is one of several FLip lineages growing in NSW.

Together those accounted for 3% in week 35, but 38% in week 37/38!

Nice article.
Whether you like the ad hoc SARS-CoV-2 lineage naming system or not, it is worth knowing that the people coming up with the names aren't just a bunch of twitter/X yahoos. They are variant trackers and they really know what they are doing.

Stuart Turville Linda Geddes That's another thing I said about predicting. Sequencing that has gone down, also in NSW/Australia now, unfortunately, is an extra reason why it has become, and will be, so much harder!
