Today I visited a Nepali Madhesi Dalit community in Bara, who have for generations faced discrimination & poverty. The simple but transformative Big Sister programme led by VSO Nepal & JJYC organises older girls to mentor young girls at risk of child marriage & school dropout.

Cameron & Osborne's definition of 'unaffordable' was economically illiterate, extraordinarily short-sighted & a betrayal of a generation of the most needy.

Gordon Brown, one of architects of Sure Start: 'The wilful destruction of Sure Start and the reductions of children’s benefits after 2010 has set back opportunities for millions of children’s futures. That’s why our country desperately needs a new Sure Start.”

I had the huge privilege today of visiting a moving & transformative VSO Nepal project in Biratnagar. Trained community volunteers organise weekly sessions for couples who are working together to confront & end gender-based violence & gender discrimination inside their families.

At Biratnagar, in Nepal, at the Nepal-India border, with Jogbani in the Indian state of Bihar over my shoulder. A border that sees thousands of Nepalis & Indians crossing both ways each day for work (& shopping) with no official intervention by the border guards of either country

UK companies selling arms abroad need a licence. The Government assesses the case using eight Strategic Export Licensing Criteria (below).
