Schools are not defined by the mission statement on the wall; they are defined by what actually goes on in classrooms.

Principals can’t mandate collaboration. The goal then, is to create the conditions where teachers see the value… and have the time.

Principals should spend far more energy catching their teachers doing the right thing than doing the wrong thing.

Teachers don’t have to change the world to make a difference.

They make a difference when they change the trajectory of a kid’s bad day.

We earn the respect of our students by who we treat them.  It’s usually that simple.

Students will remember your attitude longer than they will remember your lesson.  We better bring a good one everyday.

Relationships are not generated out of thin air; they are cultivated through conversations… and are made stronger through vulnerability.

Deep down… we’re all just hoping to have a friend to sit with at the lunch table.

Teachers are not defined by their lesson plans.  They are defined by their passion.

Teachers foster curiosity and creativity when they value good questions as much as they value right answers.

Good leaders care more about their people than they do about their vision.  A vision is important… but the people always come first.

It’s important for teachers to understand the value of addressing problem behaviors immediately… but it’s also good to have wisdom in knowing which ‘battles’ to fight.

If you’re a parent, please be patient with educators; give them the benefit of the doubt; and extend some grace.

The folks that work in schools love the students; they’re passionate about their job…but the work is hard; it is stressful; and the folks doing this work are tired.

I recommend dealing with difficult people the same way you deal with your favorites: with kindness, patience, respect, and understanding.

Management by walking around (MBWA) is a real thing. There’s no substitute for visibility… and it actually facilitates more effective leadership.

Some kids need extra help with their problems… just like some teachers need extra help figuring out how to change their computer login.
