everyone hates on Gollum but he had the right idea: become a hermit, collect jewels, swim naked in lakes and pools, occasionally hiss at people who try to make you go places

HE WHO WHISPERS, by John Dickson Carr. An old man is murdered at the top of a tall tower. Was he perhaps killed by a nymphomaniac vampire lady? (spoiler: he wasn't). Carr is a master of the locked room mystery and deserves to be as well known as Agatha Christie, who adored him.

one thing I’ve started doing this year that’s done wonders for my mental health is just writing down two or three things I enjoyed about each day that I would like to remember. you start reading back through days past and realize there’s more joy in life than you knew.

many men wrongly assume that Jane Austen is just for girls, but she was the first person to use the words “outsider,” “sponge cake,” “chaperone,” “door bell,” “fragmented” and “irrepressible.” Jane was a literary and linguistic genius.
